Exploring the Philippines and Asia - Dinalupihan, Bataan

March 20, 2010

We wanted to visit a 6-month-old little girl whose name is Arriana, nicknamed Arra.  She lives in Dinalupihan, Bataan, about 200 kms from our area in Paranaque, with her godmother.  Arra will live with her godmother until such time her mother can bring her to Italy.

We drove very early on Saturday, March 20.  We went straight to Olongapo to eat breakfast.  We later texted the godmother to give us directions to see her and Arra in Dinalupihan which is only about 12 kms from Olongapo.

Our friends Tony and Letty arrived sometime around lunchtime, also to visit Arra.

What a popular and lucky little girl, with two sets of grandpas and grandmas coming to see her.

From Dinalupihan's official website, we found CT Tops Travellers House, the only accomodation in Dinalupihan.  Word of advice:  don't stay here - it's dirty and their rate of Pesos800 is for an overnight stay only which means 12 hours it turned out.  If you come at 6pm, you have to leave at 6am or you pay extra.  Our friends Tony and Letty and us badly needed to take a nap because we almost did not get sleep the previous night so we stayed the night here.  I disinfected everything with alcohol which I always have with me when I travel.

Exploring the Philippines and Asia - Silang, Cavite

 March 16-18, 2010

My husband's cousin Gil has a lettuce farm in Silang.  When he bought this property a couple of years ago, a two storey 3 bedroom/ 2 bathroom house is included in the purchase of this 4.5 hectare farm.  Cousin Gil and wife Nilda, both civil engineers, constructed a new two storey 3 br/2 br house and a swimming pool which serves as their vacation house.  The first house is used by visiting relatives and friends.  We spent 3 nights in one of the two houses after our 4 nights stay in One Tagaytay.

We invited ourselves to this wonderful place because the temperature there is just like Tagaytay's which is several degrees colder than the rest of Metro Manila.

Just across from this lettuce farm is a flower farm.  When we visited this flower farm last year, they have all colors of roses and a lot more kinds of flowers.  This time around, we were told that they now grow vegetables in addition to flowers.  We asked to buy Pesos100 worth of vegetables but the owner won't accept our money.  He gifted us with a bag full of pechay, a bag full of mustasa and a bag full of eggplant.  What a nice person the owner was.  When we come back we have to remember to bring him a gift in return.

Exploring the Philippines and Asia - One Tagaytay Place, Tagaytay City

We took our Cebu Pacific flight this afternoon at 1235pm from Dipolog City.  Fare was Pesos1865 and including tax Pesos2150 per person.  We were in Manila before two pm.  It took a long time to get a taxi, I guess because a flight was ahead of us so all taxis were taken by the time our plane arrived.  Due to heavy traffic taxi fare was Pesos400 including tip for a 10km distance.

We got our car from our friend's house in Las Pinas and 50plus kms later we are now in a luxurious and beautiful accommodation in One Tagaytay Place.  We have a regular room but the queen-sized bed with very comfortable matress, 4 thick but soft pillows, the chocolate colored sofa and the monochromatic interior decor make this room look really classy and  luxurious.

We will stay here 4 nights for free starting tonight and checking out on March 16.  My husband and I own two units in this condo which is operated as a hotel.  As owners, one of the perks we can enjoy in this hotel is to  stay 7 nights free of charge yearly for each unit we own and because we have two, we will enjoy 14 nights no charge this year.

C'est la vie.

Exploring the Philippines and Asia - Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte

Dipolog is a more progressive city than Dapitan.  Dipolog has two Jolibee restaurants while Dapitan has none. I don't know why I am comparing these two cities but probably because of the close proximity of these two cities to each other.  We were told at the pier in Dapitan, it's only 18 kms to go to Dipolog.

We stayed in this city for two nights in a place called Ragin Pension for Pesos520 a night for a double room with private bath and aircon.

Our very brief visit to Dipolog consist only of going to the boulevard to catch the sunset, roaming the city streets, having dinner in Chinese Cuisine Restaurant, going to the market early morning to buy native delicacies such as puto maya, suman, puto, mangoes, mangosteen and lanzaones and using the airport to fly back to Manila.

When I go back to Dapitan, I would probably go back to Dipolog.

Exploring the Philippines and Asia - Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte

Yesterday, we went back to Dapitan from Dipolog by airconditioned van.  Fare was Pesos25 per person.

The main thing in Dapitan is the city's association with Jose Rizal, our national hero,  who lived here for four years as a prisoner by the Spaniards.

I personally really enjoyed our visit to this place which is called Rizal Shrine which is actually a 16 hectare property where Jose Rizal's house made of native materials are kept and restored to this day, his toilet, his kitchen, his swimming pool, his bamboo water system, his clinics/hospital houses - 1 for male and 1 for female, his dorm for his students, his chicken house and the modern day made of cement building addition - the Rizal Museum
.

To see all these and be reminded of his life and greatness is a wonderful experience.

Rizal lived here for four years.  In school, we were taught Jose Rizal was exciled in Dapitan.  Actually he was brought here escorted by Spanish guards and if I am not mistaken, also by Spanish officers.  He was a great threat to Spain and here in Dapitan is where he can do less damage to Spain and because of the location, surrounded by waters, it was difficult for him to escape or be helped to escape.   He was a prisoner and as such, he was with Spanish guards the entire time.

Four years later he was brought to Fort Santiago in Manila and 5 months later he was executed by firing squad in Luneta.

During our brief visit and tour of his property, I am in awe of his intelligence which to this day, in my personal opinion has not been equaled by any person dead or alive.

I am touched when he wrote his mother of his accomplishments - one of which was he bought a 16 hectare property in Dapitan by the sea.  He said he already full paid the property and that the property is titled.  He proceeded to describe the property and he even enumerated the kinds of trees he planted or had planted and what trees are already existing and the number of trees per type of tree.

The greatness of this man is unbelievable.

We had lunch in a place called "dampa" which is actually restaurants partially submerged in a river.  We chose the restaurant called Inato Lang.  This is our best meal in our entire trip.  We had two torta eggplant, 1 ampalaya con carne, 1 crispy shrimps and 2 rice.  Bill was Pesos 285.

Dapitan is small, clean, beautiful, surrounded by blue sea, huge trees everywhere, back in time ambiance, smiling and kind people, my kind of town.

I asked my husband, if he has to choose only 1 favorite city, which one is it - Dumaguete or Dapitan.  He chose Dumaguete, I chose Dapitan.

Exploring the Philippines and Asia - Montenegro Lines Dumaguete to Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte

After two nights in Dumaguete, we crossed the sea to reach Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte.  There are several shipping lines doing business in this parts and one fast craft.  The fares as follows:
Ocean Jet - Pesos650, two hours
Montenegro Lines - Pesos262, 4 hours

Because we are in no hurry and are frugal, we chose the later.

M/V Maria Beatriz which was scheduled to leave at 4pm, left promptly at 4.  We also arrived in Dapitan on schedule which was 8pm.

On the vessel, what we have as fellow cruisers are the not well off Filipinos and a Caucasian couple.  At first, we sat on the airconditioned part of the vessel.  I noticed a lot of men including my husband laid on the cushioned long seats and were sleeping as there was a lot of seats to be had.  More people are outside or in the other sitting room where there was no aircon but a tv was on.  Once I decided fresh sea breeze is better, I stayed outside and chatted with a young gay guy, named Leo, who was going to Zamboanga to start up a restaurant called Chicken Ati-Atihan.  When I asked him about where he came from, he said Bohol and because it was related to what we were talking about, he told me about his mother who left when he was a little boy, came back 12 years later, said she's going to come back but that was five years ago.  Sad!  He grew up under the care of his grandparents.

On M/V Maria Beatriz, here's how I passed the time:
played sudoku
talked with Leo
played Free Cell on the laptop
talked with Mar about Leo, etc
listened to music simultaneous with playing Free Cell

The crossing was a little scary because the vessel's motion was not smooth, on the contrary, the motion was like your brain is going to be scrambled like an egg.  We also thought of the shaken child syndrome in which a child's brain gets damaged after being shaken hard physically which could lead to death eventually.  Beacause Mar was lying down, he felt it more and said he felt his brain is going to go mushy or something like that.

At past 7pm, the vessel stopped.  We were wondering why but can't find anybody to ask.  By this time, we already can see Dapitan (Dapitan's lights actually) and I figured, we can easily be rescued because we are no longer in the middle of the sea.  Maria Beatriz did not stop long and she went on her way.

On the port of Dapitan, transportation to go anywhere is tricycle which is Pesos40 per person to go to anywhere in Dapitan or Pesos50 per person to go to Dipolog.  It was already really dark and late to be anywhere arriving in a strange place.  We found our tricycle, we were brought to the following pension houses in Dipolog:

Pension Jose - internet says double with ac and bathroom cost Pesos550.  The lady was charging Pesos700 but the main reason we did not take this place was because the bathroom was filthy.  Don't go here because:
1.  they are not honest
2.  dirty
3.  far from the city center

Pension Ranillo - the guy at the lobby was pleasant and smiling which was a welcome treat coming from a tiring and "life threatening" situation.  Double here with ac and CR is Pesos500 something.  No luck here because the room of our choice is not available.  We did not see the room.  City center located.

Pension Ragin - pension is located on the second floor, clean, freshly painted, acceptable.  Room for two persons is Pesos520 with ac and CR.  If you want a tv, pay Pesos80.  This is 1/2 block to a clean public market, 1.5 blocks to center where shopping malls and Jolibee is located.  We stayed here for two nights.

Exploring the Philippines and Asia - Dumaguete, Negros Oriental

We stayed two nights in this city and both nights we just sat on the best spot in Dumaguete City.  Rizal Boulevard is so beautiful at night, the street is lined with really big, old Acacia trees, with lots of hanging small lanterns which are fully lit at night.  This long stretch of shoreline becomes a romantic place at night, with the sea breeze giving a most welcome comfort.

Rizal Boulevard is lined with all kinds of restaurants from budget to high-end and from local food to international cuisine.

Dumaguete City is where Siliman University is located.  I think this university has made this city booming.  Filipino youths from the Visayas come to this city to get a university education.  We've noticed Koreans also found this city a good place to live in.

Sans Rival is a cafe famous in this city for delicious, melt-in-your-mouth Silvannas.

My husband asked yesterday - " so, is Dumaguete our favorite city?".  I responded - "yeah, so far, we can live here".
