Exploring the Philippines and Asia - Buying a Used Car in Metro Manila

We arrived in the Philippines on Jan. 18 and because we have decided to buy a used car for our one year stay here, we started looking for the perfect used, but not flooded, in the Pesos300K range car on Jan. 19.  We thought we wanted to buy a Toyota Vios or a Honda City because they are in the low price range and also because of their smaller engines - 1300 cc - which translates to longer mileage which means lesser fuel expense.

After typhoon Ondoy, most used cards for sale are assumed to be flooded to be on the safe side.  After looking at a few used car dealers in Alabang, Muntinlupa, we had a change of heart and shifted our interest to Nissan Sentra - reason being - for the same amount of money, we could get a  year 2004-2005 model while with Toyota and Honda we could get a year 2000 model.

After 8 days of searching, I was very interested to buy a black, year 2006 model Nissan Sentra, automatic transmission, all power, looking very fresh on the 9th day.  But the problem was, the seller can't "find" the owner's manual and maintenance history of this car he was selling.  I suspected the car have been flooded together with the owner's manual and maintenance records that's why the seller won't give those.  We cancelled our scheduled purchase and proceeded with option no. 2.

My husband set up an appointment to again see our option no. 2 - a year 2004, black Nissan Sentra, manual transmission, GST model which means more options were loaded into this car.  On the 9th day, after everything was checked and double checked, my husband went with the seller to PNP (Philippine National Police) Anti Carnap Division  and then later to LTO (Land Transportation Office) to facilitate the transfer of the ownership of this car.  We paid Pesos280,000 or Canadian $6,360.
