Buying an RV in Mantova, Italy

May 22 - May 28, 2007

Mar and I haven't experienced RVing in our entire life, even as passengers, even 1 day of rental RV - no, zero, zilch, nada, nothing.  It just happened that we both agreed to tour Europe and the best way to tour Europe is to have a transportation and the best transportation is something where we can sleep at the same time.  We've decided that transportation with accomodation = savings.

We have informed my niece Regina of our plan when we were still in Surrey so it was not a surprise to her that we would need her to help us look at RV shops for a used RV to buy.  She is married to an Italian, she has acquired Italian citizenship and to make things easy, she would have to be the buyer meaning the registration or the papers would be in her name. I trust her completely so this is not a problem.

Part of the plan was that after we're done RVing in Europe, we or she (Regina) will sell the RV.  That would of course mean that we would recoup a huge part of our money spent buying the RV.  I did have some numbers in my head, gathered from research/googling buy and sell and buy-back schemes of used RVs in UK, Netherlands and Germany.

Numbers/budget as follows:
we buy RV:  Euros 8,000

After 5 months:
we sell RV: Euros 5,000

The numbers above means our total transportation and accomodation expenses for 5 months would be Euros 3,000 or Euros 600 a month or Euros 20.00 a night. We knew this was a great idea.

We did have a rest day the following day after our arrival, we enjoyed the new house, we did food and grocery shopping, we just hang out with family as follows:  Romano and Regie, Alfredo and Kevin (sons of Roma and Regie) and Carla, another niece who works legally for Regie as barista.

Romano and Regie owns Bar Manila, a coffee shop cum apperitivo, wine, drinks bar located in Gazoldo, Mantova, Italy.  Bar Manila is a popular hang out place for Italianos who are culturally disposed to socializing in bars while drinking wine and coffee.

We spent a few days RV hunting, Regie picked-up my daughter Charisse (Cha) from the airport who arrived from Canada, we visited my brother Ernie who works in Italy legally, continued our RV search with Cha and on May 28, we found "the RV".  We put Euros 1,000 deposit and went home very happy.  RV would be available for pick-up on May 30, registered and ready.

At this point it would be appropriate to report, before I end this post, the actual numbers that transpired re buy and sell of "the RV".

purchase price including registration and insurance:  Euros 7,500
sold 7 months later after we left Italy in late Oct.:  Euros 4,500

It is wonderful to note that purchase price less recouped amount = Euros 3,000 which was exactly on target.

My next posts will be about our first RVing experience ever.

Cheers
